white noise

'White Noise' translates the vibrations (traffic) from the upper level of the Detroit/Superior bridge (Cleveland, OH) into light on the columns of the lower level. This not only draws attention to the bridge and its physical structure, but also the migration of people in and out of the city.

I knew I wanted to create a piece that not only related to the bridge, but activated it as well. When touring the bridge in the spring, the noise from the cars overhead was very apparent, but from attending the festival last year, there was so much extraneous activity that the idea that cars and trucks were overhead was somewhat lost. Then as project proposals were due, the census came out showing that Cleveland had once again dropped a significant number of inhabitants. What better way to play on the idea of depopulation and the festival's theme of cur(RE)nts then to use the bridge as a tool to highlight the movement of people by visually translating the traffic above.
